The silhouette of the 1880s was defined by the bustle—a padded under structure worn at the back of the waist that gave volume to skirts. By the 1890s, fashion shifted toward the ‘hourglass’ figure with nipped-in waists, full sleeves (often the leg-of-mutton style), and flared skirts that allowed more ease of movement.

Typical garments included high-necked blouses, bodices with intricate detailing such as lace, pleats, and decorative buttons, and full-length skirts often worn with petticoats. Materials ranged from wool and silk to cotton and velvet, depending on the season and the woman’s class or region. Hair was often worn up in buns or twists, sometimes adorned with combs or small hats, especially in formal portraits.

Photography studios at the time aimed to capture both likeness and respectability. Subjects were posed with care, sometimes with props like books or furniture, and encouraged to maintain serious or composed expressions due to the long exposure times.
