Dave Demske's "Self Portrait:Under Pressure," Winner of The Midwest Museum of American Art 35th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibition in 2013.
"Rat traps and rusty knives, springs popping out of my head, a pressure gauge overloading, a hand holding a voodoo doll with pins and a clock; several other clocks, one implanted in the face, eyes bugging out, a ball of string unraveling, dentures on edge (grinding teeth) flames of hell on the (depression-black) bird cage and base, tweezers (many) hanging over the springs in my head (thanks, doctors...)"
The second award winning piece is called "The Ten Thousand Things," which recieved the Ken and Kathy Zienty Merit Award.
"A cage within a cage- inside the large cage is a smaller cage, totally empty except for a Buddha incense burner- surrounding it in the larger cage however are the "Ten Thousand Things" Buddha refers to which distract me from inner peace...things I gathered from my house which I don't really need... (A comb? really? hope springs eternal...) Christmas decorations (I think everyone has too many boxes full of these...) stupid little ceramic figurines, a fistful of non-working pens, all kinds of detritus and crap I have no need for but keep anyway. This was painted in garish yellows and purples and orange- it seems most stuff from the dollar store is brightly colored. There is a syrup container full of dice (the sweet addicting lure of buying more stuff, taking a gamble that it may be worth something) a hand extending from the cage asking for 'More...'"
