Family of Keith Porter Jr. and Attorney Ben Crump formally called on California Attorney General Rob Bonta on February 3, 2026, to launch an independent investigation into Porter's death at the hands of an off-duty ICE agent." Porter, a 43-year-old father of two, was fatally shot on New Year’s Eve outside his Northridge apartment. While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has praised the agent, identified by his attorney as Brian Palacios, as a "brave" officer who responded to an "active shooter," Porter’s family contends he was merely firing celebratory shots into the air and was "executed" without warning
