➤ Scottish diplomat, jurist, and writer born August 26, 1875, in Perth, and died February 11, 1940. The dauphin son of a priest, he studied at Glasgow University and Brasenose College, Oxford.
He served in the British Army stationed in France as a temporary Lieutenant Colonel between 1916 and 1917. With the appointment of Lloyd George as Prime Minister, Buchan was invited to serve as Director of Information in 1917 and 1918, and then briefly as Director of the Secret Service. After the war he became director of the Reuters news agency.
Between 1927 and 1935, Buchan was Conservative MP in charge of Scotland's universities. He was also Lord High Commissioner of the Church of Scotland. In 1935 he moved to Canada, and shortly thereafter was invested first Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield, and served as Governor General of Canada until the time of his death.
