History and Present of Port Praski Estate in Warsaw
(Turn on Subtitles/CC to read details about this place while watching the video. They start at 1:30 and update every 10-15 seconds)
1. Early History
Port Praski, on the Vistula River in Warsaw’s Praga-Północ, began as a late 19th-century port. Known as the New Port, it planned five basins, but only three were built between the World Wars. It served as a goods transshipment hub and winter harbor, with a water station from 1885. By the 1970s, Port Żerański took over, and the water station closed in 2008. The port spans 38 hectares, bordered by Okrzei, Jagiellońska, Sokola, and Wybrzeże Szczecińskie streets.
2. Postwar Decline
Post-World War II, Port Praski’s role diminished as Warsaw’s infrastructure changed. By the 1990s, the port and its piers were neglected. Urban planner Jan Rutkiewicz proposed a high-rise Praga center, but plans shifted to low-rise residential projects with greenery.
3. Revitalization Beginnings
In the 2010s, Port Praski’s riverside potential sparked revitalization. In 2012, plans emerged for a vibrant urban district. A 2016 flood control sluice approval enabled development. Led by Port Praski Nowe Inwestycje, nearly 900 apartments were built by 2024 along Okrzei, Krowia, and Sierakowskiego streets.
4. The Doki Project
Launched in 2024, the Doki project by APA Wojciechowski Architekci transforms the waterfront with 337 apartments, expanding to 1,270. It features 13,300 sqm of green spaces, 400+ trees, a marina, and kayak moorings, inspired by Copenhagen and Amsterdam, with buildings of five to seven stories and one 10-story structure.
5. Present Day
Port Praski is now a thriving hub blending modern living with Praga’s charm. Near Stadion Narodowy metro, it offers access to Old Town and Saska Kępa. With luxury apartments, retail, restaurants, and a footbridge to Vistula boulevards, it’s a vibrant urban space.
6. Significance and Location
Port Praski leads Warsaw’s right-bank revival, turning an industrial site into a dynamic district. Just 1.5 km from the Old Town, near the Copernicus Science Center and Royal Castle, its innovative design and green spaces make it a model for urban development.
