A rare cold snap is hitting Florida — but can hummingbirds actually survive it?
After a hummingbird was found on the ground after a cold front, I looked into what really happens during sudden freezes — and how you can help.
A rare cold snap is moving into South Florida, bringing freezing temperatures into a place where hummingbirds are still present. After hearing about a hummingbird found on the ground after a cold front — placed in a box in the sun, then later gone — I wanted to understand what really happens to hummingbirds during sudden cold snaps in Florida.
So… can hummingbirds survive Florida cold snaps?
In this video, we break down the real science behind hummingbird survival during cold weather, including:
why cold itself isn’t usually what kills hummingbirds
how sudden cold creates a dangerous fuel crisis
why hummingbirds burn energy faster than almost any other bird
what torpor is, and how it works as a short-term survival tool
why torpor isn’t a guarantee of survival
how Florida hummingbirds behave before, during, and after cold fronts
We also cover the real dangers hummingbirds face during freezes, including:
running out of fuel
disappearing nectar sources
loss of insects
exposure to cold, wind, and wet weather
I also walk through what likely happened to the hummingbird my friend found — and why placing it in a box in the sun may have given it a fighting chance.
Most importantly, this video explains exactly what to do — and what NOT to do — if you ever find a hummingbird on the ground, including:
why a cold hummingbird can look dead but still be alive
how to safely contain and warm it
why you should never force sugar water into a hummingbird’s beak
when to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator
Finally, we go over practical ways you can help hummingbirds during a Florida freeze, including:
keeping feeders available during the day
using the correct nectar ratio
why early morning feeding matters most
rotating feeders during freezing conditions
providing shelter and reducing wind exposure
Hummingbirds are tougher than they look — but during sudden cold snaps, survival often comes down to fuel, shelter, warmth, and timing. Sometimes, the difference between life and death really is just a little help at the right moment.
