3+1 Questions about Humanitarian Engineering
Humanitarian Engineering is a cross-disciplinary field that aligns with the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Humanitarian engineers work with vulnerable and marginalised populations, consider local knowledge, resources and capabilities, and combine social and technical thinking to design solutions for improving hazard resilience and sustainability.
In this webinar, Dr. Spyros Schismenos and Dr. Nick Brown share their experiences working with remote communities, outline the humanitarian engineering program at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, and present ‘Engineering WITH People’ – the first board game in humanitarian engineering!
About the Speakers
Dr Nick Brown
Dr Nick Brown believes that engineering can address complex global issues such as poverty, inequality, and sustainability. Nick co-leads RMIT University's Humanitarian Engineering Lab which delivers innovative teaching and research at the intersection of design, technology, and education for social change empowering engineers to meet community aspirations and desires both in Australia and overseas. Nick has a track
record delivering high standard education, receiving an Australia Award for University Teaching, two Engineers Australia teaching awards, and multiple RMIT accolades. Nick is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and a member of both the International Federation of National Teaching Fellows and Engineers Australia.
Before joining RMIT, Nick was the Research Lead at the not-for-profit organisation Engineers Without Borders Australia. In this role he led the development and delivery research initiatives that generated new knowledge and technologies for sustainable development. Nick studied at the University of Edinburgh in the UK.
Dr. Spyros Schismenos
Dr. Spyros Schismenos is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Humanitarian Engineering at RMIT University. As the co-leader of RMIT’s Humanitarian Engineering Lab, he passionately advances innovative teaching and research at the intersection of human-centered design, appropriate technology, and experiential learning. Spyros specialises in Humanitarian Aid and Development Practices, Emergency and Disaster Management, Renewable Energy, Community-led Prototyping, Gamification in Learning, and Community Engagement.
One of his notable achievements is the creation of ‘Engineering WITH People’, a ground-breaking board game series that embodies the essence of Humanitarian Engineering. Spyro’s extensive network includes partnerships with international organisations like UNESCO, as well as NGOs, in an effort to promote positive change and social justice. Before joining RMIT, Spyros worked at the University of Technology Sydney and Western Sydney University in New South Wales, and at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology in Taiwan.
