Bishop Samuel Mar Irenios Arrested in Illegal Sand Mining Case

Bishop Samual Mar Irenios of Syro Malankara Dioceses and 5 other clergymen were arrested near Ambasamudramm, Tamil Nadu on Saturday 5th February. The preachers of righteousness were caught for mining sand from Thamirabharani River “illegally”.
In a divine turn of events Bishop Ireneos ,69, and Father Jose Chamakala ,69, have been admitted to the Government Medical College, Tirunelveli, owing to sudden illness following the arrest. The rest, Priests George Samuel, 56, Shaji Thomas, 58, Jijo James, 37, and Jose Kalaviyal, 53, have been lodged in the inner sanctums of the Nangenjeri Jail.
Manual George of Kottayam was arrested earlier in the case. The Crime Branch- CID said that Manual George had acquired a license to store, process and consume rough stone, gravel, crusher dust and M-sand in a 300-acre plot of land adjacent to a check dam for 5 years since 29th November 2019. The land, owned by the Pathnamthitta Diocesan Bishop, was leased out to Manual by the Dioceses. Manual then went on to carry out large scale commercial mining sand from Vandal Odai check dam and areas close to it. In September 2020 the Cheranmahadevi Sub-Collector inspected to site, finding that a total of 27,774 cubic meters of sand had been illegally hauled and used commercially. He laid a fine of 9.57 crores on the land owners under the Tamil Nadu Mines and Minerals Concession Rules, 1959
Joyal P John, a senior priest of the Diocese stated the 300 acres of land were used for agriculture in the past, majorly for coconut and gooseberry farming. "Later, it was leased to a Kottayam native for farming. But he committed malpractices without our knowledge and carried out sand mining in adjacent plots of land that don't have title deeds. The bishop and the priests were summoned for interrogation,". Bail plea formalities and proceedings are underway at the moment.
