“This is something we should have moved away from a long time ago,” one lawmaker said. “There are alternatives that don’t involve harming animals.”

Legislation proposed at the state level would ban this type of research, with supporters arguing that modern technology allows scientists to conduct studies without using live animals. They say the issue is not just about compliance, but ethics.

“We can still advance medical research while treating animals humanely,” another supporter said.

Wayne State University has defended its research practices in the past, stating that its studies follow federal regulations and undergo strict review processes. University representatives have said the research contributes to medical advancements that save lives.

Despite that, lawmakers backing the legislation say following guidelines is not enough and insist the practice should be eliminated altogether.

The proposed bill is expected to go before a legislative committee in the coming weeks.
