The Runners stood on a cracked concrete plaza, surrounded by dilapidated warehouses. In the center: Kuro. He held his weapon rigidly in front of him. The rifle now pulsed with an aggressive, luminous purple that tinted the mist around him. Beside him, Rifa limped, her staff clutched tightly. Behind them, Brick, Viper, and Static had positioned themselves—weapons at the ready, eyes scanning the perimeter.

"There they are," Static whispered, pointing to the shadows at the far end of the plaza.

They emerged from the mist: six figures in matte black combat suits adorned with Aztec glyphs. Their faces were hidden behind fearsome predator masks—the Jaguar Warriors of Aztechnology. In their midst strode a figure in long, purple robes. He wore the Jade Mask from the Matrix. Mr. Xolotl.

“Bring it to me,” Xolotl said. His voice was even colder in the physical world than in the virtual one. “The child wants to go home.”

“CONTACT!” Static roared. “Multiple signatures from above! They’ve found us!”

Two Yellowjacket Evo attack helicopters swooped down from the black sky. Searchlights ripped through the fog, bathing the plaza in blinding white light.

“This is Evo Corporation speaking!” a voice boomed over a loudspeaker. “Put down the biological cargo and surrender! Any disobedience will be met with lethal force!”

“Evo…” Xolotl hissed. He raised his hands, green flashes of pure mana energy flickering between his fingers. “You dare disrupt our ritual.”

The helicopters opened fire. Heavy machine guns plowed through the concrete surrounding the runners. Brick roared and returned fire with his minigun, spewing leaden death into the sky.

"TAKE COVER!" Viper yelled, throwing himself behind a toppled girder.

But Kuro didn't move for cover. The weapon in his hands began to sing—a high-pitched, vibrating tone that shook the very core of his being.

Kuro raised the rifle. He aimed at the first helicopter. A single shot lashed out of the organic barrel. Not a bullet, but a flash of violet energy that left a trail of burning ozone. The projectile struck the helicopter squarely in the rotor gear.

The helicopter's metal began to mutate. The armor warped, sprouting growths that looked like enormous, black muscles. The mechanics gummed up with organic matter. The helicopter screeched like a living animal, toppled sideways, and smashed into a warehouse in a fireball.

"What a..." Static stammered, trying to hack the enemy drones that were now emerging from the rubble.

From the ground, the Evo Red Samurai advanced. Dozens of them burst from the bushes, assault rifles at the ready. They were here to reclaim their property with blood.

"Protect the objective!" Xolotl ordered his Jaguar warriors. The Aztech soldiers charged forward, not only firing—they moved with superhuman speed. One of them leaped five meters into the air, his fingers transforming into sharp obsidian claws, and landed amidst the Red Samurai. A bloody massacre began.

Rifa cast spell after spell, barriers of light to shield Brick and Viper from the crossfire. "We have to get out of here! Kuro, we have to hand this thing over and get out of here!"

Kuro turned to face her. His eyes now glowed so intensely that white light oozed from his tear ducts. He marched straight toward Mr. Xolotl, through the chaos of explosions and screaming soldiers. Every time a Red Samurai aimed at him, the weapon fired almost automatically, and the enemy dissolved in a cloud of biogenic slime.

Kuro reached Xolotl. The priest of blood magic lowered his hands. He didn't seem surprised. He seemed... satisfied.

"You did well, tool," Xolotl said.

Kuro raised the weapon and held it out to Xolotl with both hands. The black vines that had entwined Kuro's arm began to slowly loosen. They withdrew from his skin with a squelching sound.

"THE DEAL IS COMPLETED!" Xolotl shouted over the roar of another explosion. He looked at the Runners cowering behind cover. "GET OUT OF HERE! BEFORE EVO SEND THEIR BOMBERS!"

Xolotl slammed his staff into the ground. A massive wave of green energy swept across the area, hurling the remaining Evo soldiers away like toy figures. Simultaneously, a portal of shimmering darkness opened in the mist behind him.

"Brick! Get him!" Viper roared.

The troll charged forward, ignoring the bullets that ricocheted off his armor, grabbed the unconscious Kuro, and slung him over his shoulder like an empty suitcase.

"Out!" Static shouted.
