After selling his own home to fund his expedition, Pete Casey spent six and a half years becoming the first person in the world to walk the entire Amazon River upstream, swimming his crossings in open water. No boats, no bikes, nothing but his arms and legs for 4,000 miles. His journey began at the river's endpoint in the Atlantic Ocean, stretched up to its believed source in Peru, and then wound back down to the Pacific. Along the way, Casey faced torrential storms, close encounters with dangerous animals, and the unprecedented interruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. We caught up with him at the Explorer's Club in New York to reflect on his remarkable feat.
