Luis Amaral - "Transforming Healthcare Through Physics" (C4 Public Lecture)

Описание: People all over the world are attracted to heroes. The firefighter who rescues the child from the burning house. The secret service agent who takes a bullet to save someone's life. The doctor who brings someone back from the brink of death. In all of these cases, the heroes must react promptly, decisively... heroically. But the important question is: who saves the most lives? Does the heroic fireman save more lives than the people who invented smoke alarms and the politicians who required their installation? Does the ER doctor save more lives than the judges who required that safety belts be placed in cars? A 1999 Institute of Medicine report ("To err is human: Building a safer health system") estimated that medical errors are responsible for upward of 100 thousand deaths a year in the US, making it the third leading cause of death. Sadly, many of those errors are preventable and in many cases we know what needs to be done to avoid them altogether or to a large extent. The challenge is not a question of finding a solution but, like in many other contexts, of implementing the solution. In this talk I will address some of the scientific questions we need to address in order to enable a cultural change in medicine.
