Описание: When and who called the strike?
The two-day strike on December 16 and 17 was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). UFBU is an umbrella body of nine unions, including AIBOC, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), and the National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW).
Close to nine lakh employees of various state-run banks are participating in the strike.
Previous Strikes against privatization-
Employees of India’s banks went on strike - from March 15 to 16 - in protest of the Centre’s plan to privatize public sector banks.
Why?
The union wants the govt not to table the Bank Privatisation Bill (Banking Laws Amendment Bill, 2021) during this session of the Parliament. The government had in Budget 2021-22 announced its intent to take up privatization of two public sector banks (PSBs) during the year.
Impact of the strike-
Most public sector banks will remain closed today and tomorrow. Since the following two days are weekends, these PSBs will remain shut for transactions for four days in a row. Most of the banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), have already cautioned their customers about the strike's possible impact on banking operations like cheque clearance and fund transfer.

SBI in a tweet urged its staff members to reconsider their decision and refrain from participating in the strike. “Furthermore, considering the ongoing pandemic situation, resorting to a strike will cause great inconvenience to the stakeholders,” the tweet said.
However, the private sector, especially new-generation private-sector lenders, like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, are working as usual.
