During the composition of this Trio, Chopin was hesitating whether choosing a viola or a violin for the high string part. Finally he decided to publish for violin, in 1833. We propose here a version with clarinet instead of violin, following the established tradition of our predecessors who used to arrange pieces of any kind, in order to ensure a wider diffusion.
Chopin was especially fond of opera, particularly Italian opera, with focus on Bellini. The Trio, as many Chopins's pieces, might have many direct connections with opera buffa and opera seria.

The pianoforte played here is a copy of a grand piano by Fryderik Buchholtz of Warsaw from 1825-1826, held in the Museum of Local History in Kremenets, Ukraine.
It was based on the Viennese model which was popular at that time (built by the leading Viennese maker Conrad Graf, among others, and also employed by Polish makers). It was characterised by a case with rounded corners, resting on three turned column legs. This copy made by Paul McNulty is pyramid rosewood veneered, straight double- and triple- strung (plain strings), with a Viennese action, hammer heads covered with several layers of leather, wedge dampers and a 6 and a half octave keyboard with the compass C1-f4. This keyboard is broader than the original Buchholtz keyboard (6 octave, F1-f4), with several additional notes in the bass, making it possible to perform the works Chopin was writing in the late 1820s. This piano also has four pedals operating the following stops : una corda, moderator, double moderator and damper.

The clarinets (in B flat, and A for the second movement in G major of the Trio) are copies, made of boxwood, of Heinrich Grenser instruments (Dresden, c. 1810), with 12 keys, made by Agnès Guéroult in Paris in 2000.
These instruments are very similar to those played for example by Heinrich Baermann in Carl Maria von Weber clarinet concertos.
The cross fingerings needed on these instruments have a fundamental influence on the sound, which tends to approach the peculiarities of the human voice, as its lack of homogeneity, following the open and closed sound of vowels, and the nuanced attack of consonants.

The cello is an original instrument from c. 1800, anonymous, made in Vienna, mounted with gut strings.
