STEPS to SKILLS - Dance Series: EPISODE 1 - GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
Dancing is a fun activity and a great way to develop various skills. We have made a series of videos to explore the benefits of dance on skills development!
Today we are going to talk about building gross motor skills which involve larger muscles of our body like arms, legs and torso or core. Gross motor abilities involve body awareness, spatial awareness, motor planning, coordination and balance. Dance teaches awareness of where our arms and legs are in space, as well as our position in regards to other people and surroundings.
Dance movements may include balancing on one leg, walking in straight or curvy line, jumping on one or both feet, standing with feet right next to each other, bending and reaching, rocking side to side, raising and lowering arms, swaying arms back and forth. These dance moves work on strength and coordination of all 4 limbs (arms and legs). All these motor actions learnt are coordinated into the entire routine for the final performance.
