Perchance is a 16 week old juvenile Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who crash landed on the ground floor balcony/courtyard of an apartment complex.
I had this delightful little character in my care for 24 hours, but he did so well he was ready to be hanging with the other bats on day 2.
I took a lot of footage while he was with me, but I didn't aim it well so much of it was useless. I just wanted to tell the story of his time in care with me and show how rapidly he settled into care, and how confident he was when I put him in with the others.
Perchance is going to be in care for a while and released through the release aviary. He is still young, and though wild raised, he'd be dependent on his mother still for another month or so. In care, he's being fed up as much as he wants, he's bonding with the other mum raised juvies in the cage, and will be released with them.
YAY, I love happy outcomes and happy calm batties.
You will notice that the unnamed boy on the left of the cage at the carer's, is hanging confidently but hunch legged (which means he's prepared to take off at a moment's notice if I startle him), and totally in-your-face at the front of the cage. If he was scared he would have moved away from me when I approached and gone to the back of the cage - he's wary but not particularly interested in me being in the room.
You'll also notice how confident Radio is (middle boy in the cage). He is hanging, legs spread, showing off his family jewels and refusing to get out of the way when I put Perchance in with him. For a bat who has only been in care for 24 hours, Radio certainly is relaxed and very confident.
I did run a chip scanner over his back to check if he had maybe been in care before, or been hand raised - but he's not chipped. It's possible he has been hand raised and released without being chipped or banded on release but since it's not something we can track, then we'll never know.
I love that you can rescue a bat (or 3) on one day, and 24 hours later have them eating out of your hand, refusing to move out of the way when you reach into the cage, and be supremely disinterested in biting you. That shows how smart they are.
