These formations jutting from the valley have been a welcoming, memorable sight to travellers since before they gained "national monument" status in 1919. But the protected area is relatively small (in size), even though comprising both Scotts and South Bluffs and lesser rocks. Accordingly, there are just a few short trails—most serving Scotts Bluff and one is a miniature reenactment of the former Oregon Trail. Undaunted hikers are permitted crosscountry (trailless) access to South Bluff, though.
The Saddle Rock Trail gives up the most sights on one trip. Starting behind the main building, a paved path heads north toward striking banded cliffs. Through rolling prairie, initially, then rising aggressively to an exciting foot tunnel and namesake Saddle Rock, and finally topping out after 1.6 miles and 518 feet gained. From there, further exploration (such as to the official overlooks) adds little mileage/elevation. But for those who are less mobile or short on time, driving the summit road is an equally enjoyable alternative.
