Bin cages are very inexpensive and available. Lots of viewers ask why we don't use bins? Do this experiment yourself - set up Habitrail, or Critter-Trail cages that are designed for your pet species. Take the bin cage you've purchased and connect tubes from your smaller habitats to the bin.
Provide plenty of deep litter in the bin and other elements you think are appropriate for your pet.
Then observe how your small mammal uses the spaces. In my case, the gerbils and robo-hamsters did not move into the bin, but rather removed bedding from it and stuffed their small pods (Habitrail) or the One Level Habitat (critter trail). They congested their small spaces even more and left room for travel. Allowing your pets to select their favorite spaces will inform you as to what they actually prefer. IF they go for the bin and use it often, then a bin is definitely for your pet. If they elect to occupy other habitats and avoid the bin, then you also have your answer as to what your specific pet species prefer.

If you just provide a bin, or just provide a small habitat, you won't know what your pet finds most suitable. Getting angry about the habitats shown in any video, without understanding how the species of pet chose them or didn't, is fruitless. Give them a variety of choices, and learn from your pets. You'll find that they each have very different preferences and there truly is no one-size-fits-all.

Citizen science, try it and share what you've learned! Bins are the cheapest option, and they certainly offer lots of space... now, let's find out what your pet wants.

Additional information I received from a small mammal biologist:
"Small mammals like mice, rats, and rodents definitely prefer tunnels and small covered areas over open spaces. There are several reasons for this:

Protection from predators: Open spaces leave them exposed to a variety of predators like birds, cats, and even larger rodents. Tunnels and burrows provide them with a safe haven to escape and hide.
Temperature control: Underground tunnels offer a more stable temperature compared to open spaces. This is crucial for small animals as they have a high surface area to volume ratio, making them lose heat quickly. Tunnels can be cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Humidity control: Tunnels can provide a more humid environment, which is helpful for some burrowing rodents that can dry out easily in open air.
Food source: Many burrowing rodents find food underground, like roots, tubers, and insects. Tunnels put them right at the source of their meals.
So, while they might venture out into open spaces for short periods to find food or explore, small mammals generally feel much safer and more comfortable in the protection of tunnels and covered areas."
