In this thermodynamics problem, we're confronted with the challenge of determining the cost of heating an outdoor pool. We're given initial and final temperatures as well as the dimensions of the pool of water. First we determine the energy required to elevate the water's temperature to a comfortable level using specific heat. N.B. The decimal mark should be a comma (or not be there at all). Then we use the local price of energy, converting units where necessary, to determine the cost of the energy required to heat the pool. Last we derive a simple formula for the layman to use when contemplating an autumnal swimming party to determine pool heating costs.
