After performing at Rock en Seine this summer, the American songwriter, who rarely interviews, gave us ten precious minutes of his time.
Over the past seven years, John Maus has kept a low profile. After being hailed for the lo-fi, philosophical coldwave of "We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves" (2011) and "Screen Memories" (2017), released on Ribbon, the PhD-holding songwriter from Austin, Minnesota, has been through some tough times. Since the unexpected and tragic death of his brother and bass player—just hours before going on stage—Maus has performed alone, with his computer placed on the floor and his backing tracks pre-recorded, still giving his all in every single performance.
Controversy struck three years later when Maus was filmed attending the January 6th Capitol riots with his longtime collaborator Ariel Pink, and his name later appeared among the campaign’s donors. Maus quickly became a persona non grata in the industry.
Maus had woven his philosophical vision into his music and having once described himself as “further left than left”, he believed his work would speak for itself. During this long dark stretch, he cut ties with Ariel Pink, saw his marriage collapse, withdrew into solitude, reopened himself to faith and theology, and committed to writing one song per week.
The result of this is "Later Than You Think," his sixth full-length album—a kind of "Way of the Cross" where sacred music seeps into his darkwave sound, death looms large, and existence itself feels suffocating. Within it, Maus finds space to play, to clarify his political views, and to pursue spiritual elevation. Speaking to us, he says he now feels “free.”
