Before Central Park became one of the most famous parks in the world, it was home to a thriving community known as Seneca Village. Located in New York City, this settlement was founded by free Black Americans and became a place of opportunity, land ownership, and independence.
But in the 1850s, the residents were forcibly removed when the city seized their land to build what is now Central Park. Homes were destroyed, families were displaced, and a once-thriving Black community was erased from the map.
In this documentary, we uncover:
The origins of Seneca Village
The lives of its residents
Why the land was taken
How the community was erased from history
This is the forgotten story of a village that stood where millions now walk every year.
