While EMD's General Purpose line of 4-axle diesel locomotives were proving to be a huge success, the builder experimented with a larger 6-axle variant that provided more tractive effort in 1951. The result was the Special Duty locomotive, and it went on to become one of the best selling and iconic diesel locomotives in North America.
