In July 2025, South Africa and Angola came together once again united through remembrance and shared history.

A delegation from the Exile Repatriation Workstream, including representatives from SAHRA, NHC, Freedom Park, the Missing Persons Task Team, the Department of Justice, the Department of Military Veterans, and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, travelled to Angola for Phase 2 of the Angola Repatriation Project.

While Phase 1 focused on identifying the geographical clusters of Angola mapping where the battlefields, camps, and heritage sites of the liberation struggle were located, Phase 2 took this work further.

The technical team conducted gravesite mapping, went through cemetery records to identify South African graves, and visited former campsites across the north, east, and central regions of Angola.

The journey included moving visits to the Viana Transit Camp in Luanda and to cemeteries where South African comrades rest, guided by MK veterans whose stories brought history vividly to life.

This mission has deepened collaboration between South Africa and Angola and ensured that the memory of the liberation struggle continues to inspire future generations.
