The NBA announced today that Mavericks forward/guard Cooper Flagg was named the Kia Western Conference Rookie of the Month for games played in the month of January. It marked the third straight month that he received the honor, and he became the second Maverick to garner the award in three consecutive months.
Flagg (6-9, 205) averaged 20.8 points (.478 FG%, .769 FT%), 7.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 32.6 minutes per game in 12 games (all starts) in January. He scored 20-plus points six times, including 30-plus points twice and 40-plus points once. He also produced four double-doubles and four 20-5-5 efforts in those 12 contests.
Flagg set the Mavericks rookie scoring record by posting a career-high 49 points (20-29 FG, 3-5 3FG, 6-6 FT) against Charlote on Jan. 29. It surpassed the previous such record that he shared with Mark Aguirre (42), who had his jersey retired by the franchise that same night. Flagg also broke Cliff Robinson’s record (45, vs. DET 3/9/80) for the most points by a teenager in NBA history, a mark that was set before the Mavericks franchise was even formed in 1980. Adding 10 boards, Flagg became the first rookie to record a 49-point, 10-rebound effort since Michael Jordan in 1984-85.
The 19-year-old capped off the month by registering 34 points (13-25 FG, 7-10 FT), a career-high 12 rebounds and five assists at Houston on Jan. 31. Flagg became the first teenager in NBA history to record consecutive 30-point double-doubles. His 83 points over the team’s final two games in January also marked the most by a teenager over a two-game stretch in NBA history.
Flagg, who joined Luka Dončić as one of two Mavericks to garner three straight Rookie of the Month awards, leads all rookies in scoring (19.8 ppg) this season. He also ranks in the top 5 among rookies in rebounds (3rd, 6.6 rpg), assists (4th, 4.1 apg), steals (4th, 1.22 spg), field goal percentage (5th, .484) and minutes (2nd, 34.0 mpg).
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Duke, who is set to represent the Mavericks in the 2026 Castrol Rising Stars game at All-Star 2026 in Los Angeles, currently ranks sixth in the entire NBA in clutch points (82). Flagg is shooting 48.1% (26-of-52) from the field in clutch time this year.
