Maui Xaphoon Shelter in Place Lesson Series
Aloha Everyone! Lesson 16 brings us “Take Five,” the west coast jazz favorite. We are in the key of Dm, which makes it far easier to play on Xaphoon (a semitone lower than the original Ebm). The opening phrase is the trickiest, requiring two quick ventures into the second register: the first includes the grace notes from G to Ab and back, using just the baby finger pulling slightly off the hole and back down; the second is a quick trill across the register break between the F and G. The rest of the tune unfolds pretty easily in spite of the chromatic phrases. Watch the timing coming in. 5/4 is wonderful though. On the jam-along track, I enjoyed using some slightly simplified guitar chords plus pandeiro for an almost Samba flavor (if 5/4 Samba can be a thing).
