In this video I wanted to share with you my experience buying, upgrading an selling my Classic Mac Pro, as kind of a start up guide to getting into the world of eBay. Because as you all may or may not know, the best way of upgrading your Macs nowadays is to sell it on and buy a new one.

Regarding price for performance, my upgraded Mac Pro cost me $1,455 compared to the starting cost of $3,499 for a 15" MacBook Pro 2018. So the Mac Pro is still a heck of a deal. But, of course with the MacBook Pro you get a warranty, an option for an extended warranty and a higher resale value in the future, whereas with the Mac Pro if you damage it, you're screwed.
For the sale, one thing you need to be aware of is that on eBay, there are scammers. I've been selling on eBay for quite a good while and 99% of my experience on there has been great, but I have had to deal with return requests and thieves. For example, once I sold a phone on there to a scammer who proceeded to report it as damaged and didn't send back any of the included accessories. To best protect yourself against low lives the first thing to do on eBay after signing up is go into the Account - Site Preferences section and make sure you Block buyers who have a low feedback score and have 2 unpaid cases. This doesn't protect you from everyone but it does weed out time wasters.
Ok, now that that's out the way.
There are two ways of selling items on eBay once via an auction and two via buy it now. In either case eBay, Paypal and your delivery service will take a cut of anything you make, so make sure you factor that in when setting your target price.
For me, I like to list my items as Buy it now as it gives me control on how much I'd like to sell the item for, and if my item doesn't sell I can always lower the price gradually.
Initially I set to sell my Mac with all bells and whistles included, but as I reduced my asking price I decided to sell the graphics card, USB-C and computer separately, this way, I'd open the sale to wider pool of buyers.
So for the USB-C, initially I bought it for $80, and sold it for $75, eBay and PayPal took $10, and the post office took $10, leaving me with a loss of $25.
For the graphics card, I bought it for $430, sold it for $470, eBay and PayPal took $60 and the post office took $10, leaving me with a loss of $30.
For the Mac, I bought it for $620, upgraded it for $320, sold it for $1400, eBay and PayPal took $170 and sendle took $30, leaving me with an actual profit of $260. Score.
In the end I pretty much made a couple of hundred dollars, and got to use the system for a good 6 months.
Lastly, one final tip, when listing your product always try to include as many good photos as possible and make sure to list any damage or marks your Mac may have. It's always best to fully disclose it up front, rather than having to deal with a return request, as when someone returns your sale, you have to provide a full refund and the money you paid for delivery is lost.
That's it, I just really wanted to share this knowledge as for me it's been really transformative, whenever I buy a new computer I always factor in the resale value which helps me justify the cost, as I know a $3,000 purchase, is really more $500 cost after selling it on a couple of years, rather than a $3,000 cost.
