In Bharatanatyam, Kuthadavu is a type of adavu done with stamping movements, usually in aramandi (half-seated posture), coordinated with hand gestures. You already saw how it can be practiced in Mishram (7 beats) — now let’s look at it in Kandam.
🌸 Kandam Tala
Kandam = 5-beat cycle.
The counts are usually rendered as: ta-ka-ta-ki-ta (5).
Kuthadavu has to be neatly fitted into this 5-beat structure, instead of the more common 4 or 8.
🌸 Kuthadavu in Kandam
Basic Movement:
One leg stamps, the other follows, alternating right and left.
Hands (often in katakamukha or alapadma) move in rhythm with the feet.
Counting Example:
On ta-ka-ta-ki-ta (5 counts), you may do:
Right foot stamp (1), left foot stamp (2), right again (3), left again (4), finish with a pause or slight flourish (5).
Then repeat, alternating sides.
Solkattu: Recited syllables might be:
“Ta – Ka | Ta – Ki – Ta” (split as 2 + 3, to match footwork cleanly).
