The Punjab government has introduced a strict new ordinance against child marriage, making marriages of boys or girls under 18 years of age a punishable offense. According to the new law:
Registrars registering a marriage involving minors face 1 year in jail and a fine of Rs. 100,000.
Adults marrying minors face minimum 2 years in prison and fines up to Rs. 500,000.
Any marital cohabitation with a minor after marriage is considered child abuse, punishable with 5–7 years imprisonment and fines of at least Rs. 1,000,000.
Taking minors out of Punjab for marriage is treated as child trafficking, with penalties of 5–7 years in jail and fines up to Rs. 1,000,000.
Parents or guardians arranging child marriages face 2–3 years in prison.
This ordinance represents a historic move to protect the rights of children in Punjab and curb child marriage practices. It sends a clear message that child protection is non-negotiable, and violators will face strict legal consequences.
