Notable Black Innovators: Segenet Kelemu, PhD, molecular plant pathologist.
Segenet Kelemu is a female Ethiopian scientist renowned for her groundbreaking research in molecular plant pathology.
She was born in Finote Selam, Ethiopia.
Kelemu graduated at the top of her class with a Bachelor's degree in 1979 from Addis Ababa University. Next, she moved to the US, and earned a Master’s degree in plant pathology and genetics from Montana State University in 1985.
She continued her education at Kansas State University, where she received a Ph.D. in molecular biology and plant pathology in 1989. Kelemu also conducted postdoctoral research at Cornell University, delving into the molecular determinants of pathogenesis.
Kelemu's professional career began at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia, where she worked from 1992 to 2007. At CIAT, she led groundbreaking research on host-pathogen interactions, plant disease control strategies, and the role of endophytic microbes in plant development. Her work contributed significantly to the understanding of how molecular biology can be applied to improve crop resilience and productivity.
In 2007, Kelemu returned to Africa. She accepted the position of Director at the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub. Under her leadership, BecA transformed into a major force in African biosciences, with expanded research capacity, funding, and partnerships.
In 2013, she joined the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) as Vice President for Programs. Later that year, she became the Director General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi, Kenya- the first woman to lead the institution.
Kelemu's research has had a profound impact on agricultural science, particularly in understanding how plants interact with microorganisms to improve crop resilience. Her work has helped dramatically improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Africa and South America.
