Host: Bernadette Putman (Henallux university college, Belgium)
Idriss Soumah (guest 1), originally from Guinea Conakry, he is now a researcher in the social sciences and humanities department at Henallux. Idriss provides a first-hand perspective on the refugee experience in Belgium. Having arrived as a 16-year-old minor, he describes the specific administrative hurdles (such as the difficulty of accessing education without a birth certificate) and the "gaps" in support during his early years. His success in obtaining a Master’s degree and becoming a researcher allows him to speak authoritatively on how individual mentorship and school-based support are crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and academic success.
Adeline Delor (guest 2) is in charge of international relations at the University of Mons (UMons), Belgium, and the coordinator of their refugee welcome program. She provides strategic and institutional expertise. She witnessed the evolution of the UMons program from its start as a 2015 "emergency response" to the Syrian crisis into a fully integrated university mission. She offers deep insights into the structural challenges of integration, such as the need for stable funding, the importance of local partnerships with organizations like the Red Cross, and the necessity of harmonizing diploma equivalency policies at a national level.
