Dr Shyamal Mashru and Dr Maja Elia from ADHD Health Clinic explore how ADHD can present differently in women, and why it is so often missed or misdiagnosed. Drawing on clinical experience, we discuss the more internalised symptoms that many women report — including inattentiveness, zoning out, forgetfulness, difficulty initiating tasks, chronic overthinking, emotional dysregulation, and an “internal restlessness” that can look more like anxiety than hyperactivity.
We also unpack common coping and masking strategies that can hide difficulties from others, such as perfectionism, over-planning, appearing highly organised, people pleasing, and being overly agreeable in social situations. While these strategies can help women function day to day, they can be exhausting over time and may contribute to anxiety and low mood when ADHD goes unrecognised and untreated.
A key part of the conversation focuses on hormones and ADHD. We explain how changes in oestrogen and progesterone across the menstrual cycle, after pregnancy, and during perimenopause/menopause can significantly affect focus, functioning, and how well medication works. The video highlights why ADHD care in women is not “one size fits all”, and how treatment may need to be tailored — including adjusting medication timing or dosage, considering additional support for sleep, anxiety or mood symptoms, and signposting for specialist advice where appropriate.
If you suspect ADHD in yourself or someone you care about, this video offers practical insight into what to look for and why a thorough, individualised assessment matters.
