Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) presents on his Soul Facts Show, a female artist who
began her career at the 3 with her mother and siblings as the Echoes of Joy in 1956.
She won a singing contest by entering a radio show. Her prize was a phonograph record.
As she trotted down to Johnny Pearsall's record store in Liberty City, where she was
discovered by two songwriter / producers, Wille Clarke and Clarence Reid, after humming a tune in the store.
Willie Clarke took Betty to a local studio where he laid down a few tracks including
background work. Impressed in what he heard, Clarke went to visit Wright's mother
to get permission to record her. At first Betty's mother was apprehensive because of
her age (13 to be exact) but soon changed her mind and signed a drawn agreement
and the rest is music history.
Wright made her first recordings on local labels in 1966. 'Thank You Baby' on Solid Soul
Records and 'Paralyzed' on Willie Clarke's Deep City imprint. Clarke then took Betty to
meet music mogal Henry Stone where two years, signed with Alston Records (a label
first inaugurated by Stone and singer Steve Alaimo in 1964 but revamped in 1968, after
a distribution deal with Atlantic / Atco Records was made.
From 1968-1979, Betty Wright racked a total of 23 R&B classics, including her masterpiece recording of Clean Up Woman' released around the holidays in 1971
accumulating sales of 2 million copies, just weeks after its release, earning Wright
who just turned 18, a gold record.
