OVERVIEW:
In this video I try to give you a better idea as to the types of film cameras out there; it's up to you to decide which one suits your needs. THANKYOU FOR WATCHING! Please like, comment, and subscribe to Shootretro. A space for film.
Types of SLRs you will find:
Minolta X-700 : An older camera that was first produced in the early 80's. This camera gives you options like aperture priority yet also gives you the ability to be fully manual. There is no auto focus on this camera. This camera has a light meter and will suggest which shutter speed to select.
Nikon F2 : Buit in the 1970's this was part of Nikon's professional lineup. With the exception of having a metered prism, this camera is entirely manual in all regards. You pick shutter, and aperture settings as well as focus. Technically, anyone can buy this camera and be successful, but just beware that if you're new to film you may be disappointed with your first few rolls and the learning curve will be much steeper than the next two options.
Pentax ME (or ME Super): This style of camera is similar to the Minolta X-700 but differs in a few very important areas. On these cameras, beware of the digital selection for your shutter speed. Because these cameras are getting old (40 years) the electronics within them are unreliable. If the electronic components in these cameras go, you are relegated to ONE shutter speed. 1/125 for the Pentax ME Super. If you aren't too familiar with film, this is actually a pretty big deal as this only allows you to shoot in certain lighting conditions and will limit what you can do with your camera. That's not to say a working version of this style of camera won't serve you well. Just make sure it fully works before buying!
Nikon N60: This is in my opinion the best option for anyone who is trying to ease into film photography and has basic photography skills. At the price point of $20 for the body, as well as a massive lens lineup, you will keep the cost of starting up in film low and also maintain many comforts of a modern camera. These features such as Auto Focus, Auto Aperture, Auto Shutter, and electronic timers can all be turned off if you would like (with the exception being the timer). So if you need a camera to learn how to expose properly, focus properly, and make informed decisions on the shutter speed, this is an affordable option.
RANGE FINDERS & POINT AND SHOOTS:
Vivitar DL-50: There are many examples of cameras like this out there. Small, cheap, plastic point and shoots are every where and you can get some incredible shots on them. While anyone can use these, generally they are as simple as film cameras come. There are a few modern options like The Ilford Sprite, which is a camera that is very similar to the one I show in this video but is built recently.
Canonet 28: An example of a true rangefinder camera. This camera selects the shutter speed for you, and you handle the aperture and focus. Generally, these types of cameras are metal in construction and have a much more robust feel to them.
Pentax IQZoomEZY: Yes it is actually called that. This camera is a FULLY electronic point and shoot priced anywhere from $40-$80 online. While it takes fantastic photos, I suggest you look around your local flea market for one rather than buy online. As stated earlier, time and electronics don't really mix well. Buy one cheap, enjoy it for all its electronic features but don't be surprised if one day it craps out on you.
