Lyrics:
(Intro)
In the heart of the cell, where the matrix lies deep,
A cycle of fire, a promise to keep.
Two-carbon Acetyl arrives from the spark,
To light up the engine and quiet the dark.
(Verse One)
Two-carbon Acetyl joins the four-carbon floor,
Oxaloacetate opens the door.
Together they fuse, and the story begins,
Citrate is born as the wheel slowly spins.
Six carbons in total, a structure so grand,
Rearranging to Iso-citrate, just as we planned.
(Chorus)
Oh, the wheel of life, in the matrix it turns,
Where the end is the start, and the oxygen burns.
We’re gathering ghosts in the form of a glow,
NADH and the energy flow.
From six down to four, then we start it again,
The Citric Acid Cycle, the breath within.
(Verse Two)
Now Iso-citrate meets the pull of the breath,
One Carbon Dioxide is lost to the depth.
NAD+ takes a hydrogen soul,
Alpha-Ketoglutarate takes on the role.
Five carbons remain, but not for long,
Another Carbon Dioxide joins in the song.
Another NADH is caught in the tray,
As Succinyl-CoA finds its own way.
(Verse Three)
Four carbons are left, and the thioester breaks,
One GTP or ATP is all that it makes.
Succinate rises, then FAD calls,
FADH2 within these walls.
Fumarate waits for the water to find,
To leave Malate’s gentle impression behind.
(Chorus)
Oh, the wheel of life, in the matrix it turns,
Where the end is the start, and the oxygen burns.
We’re gathering ghosts in the form of a glow,
NADH and the energy flow.
From six down to four, then we start it again,
The Citric Acid Cycle, the breath within.
(Bridge)
One final step, one last hydrogen sigh,
NADH reaches up for the sky.
Oxaloacetate, restored and renewed,
Waiting for Acetyl, the cycle’s own food.
One turn gives us three NADH in the light,
One FADH2 to carry the fight.
One ATP for the work we must do,
And two Carbon Dioxides exhaled by you.
(Outro)
Six, five, four.
Back to the door.
In the matrix, we breathe.
In the matrix, we are.
