Pandharpur Wari or Wari (Vari) is an annual pilgrimage (yatra) to Pandharpur - the seat of the Hindu god Vithoba in the Indian state of Maharashtra, in honour of the deity Vitthal. Palakhis (palanquin processions) carrying the paduka (foot prints) of various saints - most notably Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram - from the Varkari (Warkari, "one who performs the Wari") sect (which venerates Vithoba), are taken from their respective shrines to Pandharpur. The tradition is more than 800 years old. This March on foot from various locations in Maharashtra to Vithoba temple, Pandharpur, attracts over a million pilgrims. The journey takes 21 days covering a distance of over 250 kms.
Lakhs of devotees start matching towards Pandharpur with no belongings, just clothes and maybe a plate to eat. The villages, Towns and Cities they travel through take care of their stay and food, etc.
It is a treat to watch how people welcome these devotees called as 'Warkaris' in their homes and other places, offering them food & shelter.
I joined the yatra or Wari as it's called in local language, on a day visit. Having driven over 250 kms to a remote village in Maharashtra to join the Warkaris on a few hours walking journey. The journey cannot be put to words. Though this vlog I hope you can get a glimpse of my experience that left a profound impact on me. This vlog is in English and also Marathi, as I spoke with the locals in Marathi.
