Politicus is composed for prepared disklavier and was created for the Dutch Pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2011, part of a collective show with various artists entitled Opera Aperta. A few days before the opening I put up a recording device and recorded it during the night between 9:00 pm and 9:00 am. The work is an encryption of the whole of Plato's late dialogue of the same name (sometimes also called ‘The Statesman') in which the ‘Stranger’ and ‘Young Socrates’ discuss the art of statesmanship and the pros and cons of different political systems. The version heard on this recording is the installation version in which the book is divided into paragraphs, and where the algorithm randomly plays through. However, one always hears the voice of the ‘Stranger’ answered by the slower and more brief uttering of ‘Young Socrates’ before moving to each different section.
