The sound your stomach makes when you are hungry is scientifically known as Borborygmi. It is a perfectly normal bodily function related to how your digestive system operates.
Here is why it happens:
📈1. Muscle Contraction (Peristalsis)
Your digestive tract is lined with muscles that contract and relax in a wave-like motion called peristalsis. This process moves food, liquid, and gas through your system. Even when your stomach is empty, these contractions continue to sweep out remaining debris. Because there is no food to "muffle" the noise, the movement of air and fluid creates a loud rumbling or growling sound.
📈2. The "Hunger" Signal
When your blood sugar levels drop, your brain sends signals to your stomach and intestines. This triggers the release of a hormone called Ghrelin. In response, the digestive organs start their rhythmic contractions to prepare for a new meal. This is essentially your body’s way of "cleaning the pipes" and signaling that it’s time to eat.
📈3. Air and Gas
Stomach growling is often louder when you are hungry because the stomach is hollow. Just like shouting in an empty room creates an echo, the gas and fluids moving inside an empty stomach vibrate more intensely, making the sound much more noticeable to you and others.
