Описание: At the end of April 2021, fighting erupted between the two Central Asian republics of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Over the course of several days, around 50 people were killed and thousands forced to flee their homes as fighting between villagers quickly escalated to draw in the armed forces of the two countries. But behind this fighting lies a long history of tension over their border; a border that was defined when they were still both parts of the Soviet Union. So, what is the Tajik-Kyrgyz border conflict all about? and what caused this latest serious incident?

The collapse of the USSR in 1991 open up a number of border disputes amongst the successor states. But whereas several of these have become high profile, such as Crimea and Nagorno-Katabakh, others have received rather less international attention. The emergence of fighting between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is one such example. Since they became independent, they have struggled to demarcate their border - a border that divides important land and water resources. This has led to frequent incidents of violence between the two countries, some of which - including this most recent case - have drawn in their armed forces.
