STORYLINE:
A student leader who played a major role in Hong Kong's large scale pro-democracy movement announced Sunday that he and some of his student group members would form a political party next month.
Joshua Wong said in a news conference on Sunday that his student group "Scholarism", which gained international fame during Hong Kong's 2014 occupy protests, is disbanding with immediate effect.
Wong gained international attention as the most visible face of the 2014 protests which blocked major arteries across the busy Asian financial hub for 79 days.
"Scholarism" is going to be suspended from operations and the group members will establish a political party while others are forming a new student group.
The 2014 protests were led by students and other activists who took to the streets to voice their opposition to Beijing's plan to restrict elections for the leader of the semi-autonomous Chinese city.
