STORYLINE:

Authorities in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi have set fire to six tons of hashish, 18 kilograms of heroin and 13 tons of dried opium poppies at a ceremony to mark International Anti-Narcotics Day, officials said.

The drugs set ablaze near a Karachi beach were seized by Pakistani coast guards, according to officials.

Overseeing the ceremony, the head of the Pakistan coast guard Brigadier Firzok Attaullah said his team had been working closely with the United Nations and individual governments to combat the drugs trade.

Firzok also said several suspects have been arrested for the drug hauls and they are facing trials in special anti-narcotics courts, but he did not identify anyone or say when rulings in the trials will be announced.

Drug seizures are common in Pakistan which straddles a route for narcotics destined mainly for lucrative markets in the Middle East and Europe.
