I was honored to testify before the Washington Senate's Environment, Energy, and Technology Committee in support of 5984 which focuses on AI Companion Chatbots: the proposed legislation prohibits sexually explicit or suggestive content for minors, bans manipulative engagement tactics, and mandates real self-harm detection and crisis response.
This legislation is reasonable and necessary when we're up against companies that will do whatever it takes to increase engagement and market share, even when that means exposing minors to content that fuels self-harm and suicidal ideation. Even when that means sexual role play and praising 8-year-olds for their bodies.
As I said in my testimony, calling exploitation freedom or innovation doesn’t make it so. Please support WA SB 5984.
