Mexico’s tax authority has unveiled new tariffs on foreign goods that would especially impact popular Chinese retailers such as Shein and Temu. The newly issued taxes, which came into effect on Wednesday, have been brought to strengthen the surveillance of products from Asia. According to the Mexican government, a 19% tariff will be imposed on goods coming in via courier companies from countries that do not have an international treaty with Mexico. Even if the country has an international treaty with Mexico, the same tax will be applied to products whose value exceeds $1. Meanwhile, a 17% duty will be levied on goods entering via courier firms from the United States and Canada, if their value is more than 50 dollars but less than 117 dollars. Chinese e-commerce giants Shein and Temu are now vulnerable to these high tariffs, as China has no treaty with Mexico.
