Improve your writing with these 4 tips. Whether you are writing an essay or a news story, all these tips can be relevant.

1. Avoiding clichés
Clichés are overly repeated words or phrases that are now boring to read. Sometimes they are just misused. Phrases like "every hand has two sides" or "every coin has two sides."

Don't overuse some idioms like "kill two birds with one stone."

2. Discourse Markers or Cohesive Devices
These are used in essay writing or formal speaking as a way of connecting ideas and thoughts. Some are useful like those as simple as "however" but some are way overused.

Don't use "day by day" or "as time goes by." Or at least, don't repeat them too much. A good band score on the IELTS Writing Task 2 depends heavily on your use of discourse markers and cohesive devices.

3. Items in a series - aka Parallelism

Make sure you have the same word forms when writing a list of three or more things. Here are two examples.

Bad:
I stayed home all day cleaning, washing the dishes and did the laundry.
Good:
I stayed home all day cleaning, washing the dishes and doing the laundry.

4. Alliteration

This is a poetic device used in forms of poetry and other artistic forms of writing. But it can be used in almost any form of writing to make it sound and read better. Basically, it just makes it more pleasant to read.

Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds, 'B' 'C' 'D' etc.
There's a reason why many Marvel superheroes have names like Peter Parker and Bruce Banner. It just sounds better and more memorable.
