Welcome to another retro computing video!
For us retro fans, thankfully, the BBS (bulletin board) scene is still alive and well. If you want to relive the nostalgia of a simpler time before the likes of Google and Facebook, then look no further! There are many BBSes that are accessible today via Telnet, and with this simple set up, you can enjoy them using your retro computer.
Equipment and software featured:
Amiga 600 running standard Workbench off of an SD card/IDE 'hard disk'
Raspberry Pi 3 running Raspbian desktop
RS232 board available at https://thepihut.com/products/rs232-b...
Serial port adapter bought from eBay
Term 4.8 for the Amiga downloaded from http://aminet.net/package/comm/term/Term
BSS sites in this video:
The Cave BSS at cavebbs.homeip.net:23
Heatwave BBS at heatwave.ddns.net:9640
I wrote a small Python script to handle passing data from the Telnet connection on the LAN to the Amiga via the serial/RS232 interface (and vice versa). This is very much a work in progress project - the Python script is very basic, and I will keep working on this to make it more stable, faster, and add features.
This doesn't have to run on an Amiga of course - it can be used on any computer with a serial connection and a terminal emulator. I have tried it on my old Windows 95 PC and it works perfectly!
If you're interested in giving this a go, and need some help with the set up, please comment and let me know.
(PS I'm aware of the Wifi232 project from a few years ago, however, I had trouble getting hold of one, so came up with this Raspberry Pi based solution instead.)
