年度内に成人となる人々を学齢ごとに日本の各地方自治体が主に1月第2月曜日（成人の日）に激励・祝福する行事である。講演会を開いたり、記念品を贈ったりする。しかし、日本国政府の主催ではなく各地方自治体が自主的に行っているため、学齢方式はどこも同じだが成人の日以外に主催する自治体も存在する。2022年（令和4年）4月1日に成年が20歳から18歳に引き下げられたものの、多くの自治体は引き続き20歳を対象に実施している。また、成年の引き下げに伴い、多くの自治体が名称を「成人式」から「二十歳のつどい」などに変更した）。これらの20歳を対象にした式典が一般的に通用している「成人式」と称される場合もある。
Coming-of-Age Day
Coming-of-Age Day is an event held by local governments in Japan, usually held on the second Monday of January (Coming-of-Age Day), to encourage and congratulate those who will reach adulthood within the school year. Lectures are held and commemorative gifts are presented. However, because it is not sponsored by the Japanese government but is conducted independently by local governments, the school-age system is the same everywhere, but some municipalities also hold it on days other than Coming-of-Age Day. Although the age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18 on April 1, 2022 (Reiwa 4), many municipalities continue to hold it for 20-year-olds. Furthermore, in response to the lowering of the age of adulthood, many municipalities have changed the name of their ceremonies from "Coming-of-Age Ceremony" ("Seimei Shiki" or "20-Year-Old Gathering") to "Twenty-Year-Old Gathering." These ceremonies for 20-year-olds are sometimes referred to as "Coming-of-Age Ceremonies," which is the more commonly used term.
