Doina Rotaru - The Eternal Return

The piece is inspired on Mircea Eliade's book The Myth of the Eternal Return, which investigates the nostalgia of a periodic return to a mythical time of origins, the eternal repetition of the fundamental rhythm of Cosmos - with its periodical destruction and re-creation. The ritual finds its real meaning only because it repeats some acts accomplished "ab origine" by Gods, Heroes or Ancestors. In my work with the same title, the main idea is the necessity of the eternal return to faith, to sacrality. The starting point of this work for 8 celli is a modal monody, similar to a prayer, written in Byzantine style. The last section is a return to the same monody, this time transformed, ramified into many heterophonical strata. The work starts with the sound D (Re) and, at the end, it returns to the same D. In fact, the whole work is a process in a continual evolution, an open cycle, unfolded in many strata, which can suggest a large volute of a spiral or, maybe, a Cosmic cycle (for this reason, the subtitle of this works is "Samsara").
