Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) 🐅🏔️
Paro Taktsang, also known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is one of the most sacred and iconic Buddhist sites in Bhutan. It is located in the Paro Valley, dramatically perched on a steep cliff at about 3,120 meters (10,240 feet) above sea level.
Key facts:
• The monastery is named Tiger’s Nest because it is believed that Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew to this site on the back of a tigress.
• In the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche meditated here, making it a deeply holy place in Vajrayana Buddhism.
• It is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists.
• Reaching the monastery requires a 2–3 hour uphill trek, offering breathtaking views along the way.
