This is the biggest annual migration on Earth. Millions of people heading home. Train stations packed. Platforms overflowing. Entire cities on the move.

We took China’s high-speed train expecting it to be busy… but nothing could prepare us for the sheer scale. From the moment we stepped into the station in Jishou, it felt like walking into a sea of people. Everywhere we looked — families, suitcases, gifts, children, grandparents — all racing to make it home before New Year.

And somehow, despite the chaos, the system keeps moving.

But as prepared for the worst, was it as bad as we expected?
