Prince: The Auteur Filmmaker (A Look at Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon, & Graffiti Bridge)

Описание: I've had the subject of auteurs on my mind a lot lately (as one does, I suppose?) and have been wanting to do a video on the subject, so here I am doing just that. But rather than bore you with the same discussion of cinema's finest auteurs, I thought it would be fun to work in a minor celebration of Prince's film career just in time for Purple Rain's 40th anniversary. Because why else would anyone talk about auteur theory on YouTube at this point? The subject has been worked more thoroughly than fresh bread at a bakery. We get it, Kubrick, Spielberg, Welles, and Scorcesse are artists! But what about Prince? He was an artist too, right? And one that tried to write, act and direct films on top of all that fancy music stuff he's known for. Wouldn't that be more interesting?

So today, I'll be taking a look at Purple Rain (directed by Albert Magnoli), Under the Cherry Moon (Prince), and Graffiti Bridge (also Prince) under the lens of auteurism. We'll talk themes, there'll be cutaways, and there will hopefully not be enough copyrighted material to get this struck by Warner Bros. Here's hoping they're too busy deleting animation for Zazlov to notice this or something.
