Welcome to your Beaufort County News Headlines. I’m Matt Goldin and here are today’s top stories.
Beaufort County Council met last night at the Beaufort County Courthouse. A 6pm general meeting followed a 5pm Caucus Meeting. An Executive Session caucus agenda included the annual performance review of the County Administrator and Clerk to Council and the receipt of legal advice relating to two items in pending litigation, a detention center case and Pine Island Golf LLC versus Beaufort County. Business of the regular County Council meeting included a proclamation celebrating the 100th birthday of Mary Green Robinson and an administrator’s report relating to the intergovernmental agreement with Jasper County to support animal intake. The Beaufort County Finance, Administration and Economic Development Committee will meet today for a special called meeting at the Arthur Horne Building located at 104 Ribaut Road in Beaufort. Agenda items include an executive session discussion relating to interviews and applicants to serve on the local 3% ATAX Committee as well as any maters arising out of executive session. In accordance with South Carolina state law Agendas are posted at least 24 hours before meetings and can be found at beaufortcountysc.gov/council/agendas. The meeting will be broadcast live at BCTV starting at 10am and available anytime after that on our YouTube Channel.
Beaufort County Sheriff PJ Tanner has entered into a partnership with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to create a 287g Task Force Model agreement, which authorizes local Beaufort County law enforcement officers to “Identify, arrest and detain people for deportation.” Beaufort County is the 20th of 46 South Carolina Counties to sign an agreement with ICE. Two Community Meetings on the 287g task force program hosted by Beaufort County Council drew capacity crowds north and south of the broad last month. Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Dr. Frank Rodriguez is visiting County Bus depots to show his appreciation for the drivers who our serve our students, sharing breakfast and hearing their feedback.

Beaufort County is partnering with ESS to hire substitute teachers and support staff. Thank you to everyone who makes being a part of educating young people their profession.
The City of Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department responded about 6pm Sunday evening to a report from a driver on the Russell Bell Bridge that a kitten had fallen through a storm drain and become stuck in pluff mud. With the use of some “creative rescue tactics”, the tiny orange kitten was retrieved and brough to it’s new foster home for bath. The City of Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department requested assistance from Parris Island Fire and Emergency Services to utilize air tracks for the rescue. Beaufort County Animal Services asks all pet owners to have their pets spayed and neutered to reduce overpopulation. Beaufort County daytime road resurfacing returns this week, with work resuming between 7am and 5pm, weather permitting. Tuesday, August 12th Rivers Court on Ladys Island is expected to experience lane closures with road cones and signage available to motorists. On Wednesday through Friday, Egret Drive on Ladys Island will be under construction. More information is available at beaufortcountysc.gov/news.
